The second season of Sekirei (2008), Pure Engagement (2010) combines two popular anime genres, the harem comedy and the jiggle adventure. Mild-mannered, goodhearted Minato is a ronin: despite his intelligence, he's failed the exam to get into the university of his choice--twice. He's also an "Ashikabi," a human who shares supernatural bonds with the Sekirei, extraterrestrial beings who take the form of human females with phenomenal powers (not the least of which is keeping their pneumatic figures inside their scanty costumes). All the Sekirei are pitted against each other in a deadly game orchestrated by the evil president of the all-powerful MBI Corporation, but the six who live with Minato in Maison Izumo spend the first several episodes squabbling over who's his favorite. Episode seven presents a lot of background information from season one, but by that time, viewers will have given up on the tangled but fragmentary plot. The filmmakers try to raise the stakes in the later episodes, but the characters are so shallow and silly that the attempts to convey serious emotions come across as bathos. Sekirei: Pure Engagement plays like Love, Hina restaged by Victoria's Secret. It's an inane succession of jiggle shots and fights designed to excite hormonal adolescent boys. The OVA "Two Gossip Topics" acts as a sort of bridge between the seasons, and features even more nudity and boob jokes. The fan-service adventure Witchblade (2006) is another trans-Pacific hybrid: a Japanese TV series based on an American comic. Masane Amaha and her obnoxiously precocious daughter Rihoko were discovered amid the ruins after an earthquake devastated 22nd century Japan. During the disaster, she somehow acquired the sentient ultimate weapon, the Witchblade. When Masane comes near an X-Con, a prototype cyborg made by Douji Industries from human cadavers, the Witchblade causes her to morph into a fighting fiend--in an outfit Pamela Anderson might wear in a sequel to The Dark Knight. The Witchblade supposedly endows the wielder with "insatiable lust and unthinkable power," but Masane gets her exposed derrière kicked by women using Cloneblades, imitation Witchblades the Douji Group also created. Based on the manga by Suu Minazuki, Heaven's Lost Property (2009) is another example of the nerd-meets-submissive-beauty genre, in the tradition of Chobits and Steel Angel Kurumi. Teenage Tomoki, who lives alone in rural Japan while his parents are away, insists "there's nothing like peace and quiet." He loses any hope of either when an explosion brings down beautiful, scantily clad Ikaros, who announces she's a "Pet-Class Angeloid." Tomoki is now her master, and she lives only to fulfill his desires. The presence of the buxom Ikaros gets Tomoki in trouble with his best friend and next-door neighbor Sohara. Nymph, a second Angeloid, arrives and reveals that Ikaros is really Uranus Queen, a terrible warrior, like Kurumi. Numerous contretemps ensue before things get sorted out more or less satisfactorily. Unfortunately, Tomoki comes across as a much less sympathetic character than Tenchi or Keitaro in Love, Hina: he's a lecher, a peeping tom, a slacker, and a fussbudget, and giving him occasional lines about friendship doesn't make up for his loutish behavior. But the series draws viewers for its many jiggle shots and panty jokes, rather than nuanced characters or plot subtleties. The popularity of Heaven's Lost Property and the related second TV series, OAV, and theatrical feature suggests that there's a large audience of lonely, hormonal adolescents eager to indulge their fantasies. Based on a juvenile novel by Diana Wynne Jones, Howl's Moving Castle marks the first time Miyazaki has adapted another writer's work since Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). Sophie, a 19-year-old girl who believes she is plain, has resigned herself to a drab life in her family's hat shop--until the Witch of the Waste transforms her into a 90-year-old woman. In her aged guise, Sophie searches for a way to break the Witch's spell and finds unexpected adventures. Like Chihiro, the heroine of Spirited Away, Sophie discovers her hidden potential in a magical environment--the castle of the title. Using CG, Miyazaki creates a ramshackle structure that looks like it might disintegrate at any moment. Sophie's honesty and determination win her some valuable new friends: Markl, Howl's young apprentice; a jaunty scarecrow; Calcifer, a temperamental fire demon; and Heen, a hilarious, wheezing dog.
