Spice and Wolf: Season One [Blu-ray]

Spice and Wolf: Season One [Blu-ray] Overview

Lawrence, a traveling merchant searching for profit, finds a naked girl with the ears and tail of a wolf asleep in his cart. Her name is Holo – a harvest goddess with an untamed beast lurking inside who longs to return to her beloved northern home. Armed with his street smarts and her animal instincts, a simple peddler and a forgotten deity begin a journey through the wild countryside. Along their path, the riches of happiness shall be reaped, even as the bankruptcy which dwells in the human heart is exposed.

Spice and Wolf: Season One [Blu-ray] Specifications

In the fantasy-adventure Spice and Wolf (2008), Craft Lawrence, a young peddler in a realm that suggests Renaissance Europe, finds himself caught up in a pagan ritual come true. For ages, the farmers of one region believed the wheat harvest was ensured by a powerful wolf-spirit who periodically appeared in the form of a beautiful young woman. As he leaves the region, Lawrence discovers a naked girl with furry ears and a tail sleeping in his wagon. The girl declares she is Holo, the wise and powerful wolf; now that people no longer believe in her, she wants to return to her home in the far north. How wise she is may be open to question, but she's definitely a fussy wolf, endlessly berating the long-suffering Lawrence. Although he's supposed to be a capable trader who buys low and sells high, Lawrence's fortunes take a decided downturn when Holo joins him. A scheme involving currency speculation blows up in his face, and an attempt to deal in armor leaves him bankrupt. Lawrence and Holo wander from town to town, but they don't get much of anywhere: this set could end two episodes earlier or later without affecting the minimal plot. The humor runs to heavy drinking and reverse sexism, with Holo repeatedly declaring, "men are fools!" Her ears and tail give the fan service nudity an unwholesome tone that suggests Spice and Wolf was designed for adolescent furries. (Rated TV 14: nudity, violence, alcohol use, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

Eden of the East: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]

Eden of the East: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] Feature

  • EDEN OF THE EAST - COMPLETE SERIES - BR (DVD)

Eden of the East: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] Overview

Akira Takizawa wakes up naked outside the White House with no memories. He’s got a gun in one hand, a cell phone in the other, and doesn’t know if he’s a good guy or one of the worst. He doesn’t remember the phone gives him instant access to ten billion yen and a woman who can make his most outlandish requests a reality. He doesn’t recall his connection to the ongoing missile attacks terrorizing the Japanese people. Or the part he played in the sudden disappearance of 20,000 shut-ins. He doesn’t even remember he’s supposed to save Japan and will be murdered if he fails. Whatever it is he’s tangled up in, Takizawa’s definitely in deep – and that’s not even scratching the surface.

Eden of the East: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] Specifications

Eden of the East scored a big hit in Japan when the series aired in spring 2009: in less than a year, two follow-up features continued the story, The King of Eden and Paradise Lost. Twentysomething Akira Takizawa wakes up in Washington, DC, buck naked and stripped of his memories: all he has is a gun and a super-sophisticated mobile phone that delivers anything he requests. He meets Saki Morimi, a college senior on her graduation trip to America, and returns with her to Japan. Takizawa tries to recover his memories, which may be linked to a pair of missile attacks on Japan and the disappearance of 20,000 NEETS (young men with No Employment, Education or Training). From his phone--which provides the equivalent of more than ¥8 million (about 0,000,000), Takizawa learns that he is a seleçao, one of 12 agents charged by the mysterious Mr. Outside with saving a faltering, apathetic Japan. As he resolves the mystery of his identity, Takizawa gets help from Saki, her friends, and a hikikomori superhacker. Eden of the East was written and directed by Kenji Kamiyama, writer-director of the popular Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Kamiyama once again demonstrates his exceptional skill at building suspense and weaving an exciting fantasy. The cyber-terrorism elements of Eden recall the "Laughing Man" mystery in Stand Alone Complex, but this time Kamiyama is working with his own characters and world, and the results are more intriguing. The taut scripts and a winning performance by voice actor Jason Liebrecht make Takizawa an appealing hero, even in the most improbable circumstances. Eden of the East ranks among the very best anime of 2010. (Rated TV MA: violence, nudity, risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Specifications

Hayao Miyazaki gained widespread attention in Japan for his complex ecological manga series, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1982), which he adapted for the screen two years later. One thousand years after a war devastated much of the Earth, humanity clings to existence at the fringes of a vast, polluted forest inhabited by monstrous insects. Only Nausicaä, the princess of the tiny realm of the Valley of the Wind, grasps the environmental significance of the forest. She sees beyond petty wars and national rivalries to the only viable future for the planet. In Nausicaä, Miyazaki began to explore elements he would develop more fully in his later films: daring, compassionate heroines; exciting flying sequences; colorful side characters; strong interpersonal relationships; and a call for an ecologically sustainable way of life. Nausicaä prefigures Sheeta in Castle in the Sky and Chihiro in Spirited Away, just as the rough and ready Asbel anticipates Pazu in Castle in the Sky and Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke. For years, Nausicaä was available in the United States only as the badly re-edited Warriors of the Wind. The new English dub from Disney presents the film in its entirety, with strong vocal performances by Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart, Alison Lohman, and Edward James Olmos. Spirited Away Overview

From one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the history of animated cinema comes the most acclaimed film of 2002. Hayao Miyazaki's latest triumph, filled with astonishing animation and epic adventure, is a dazzling masterpiece for the ages. It's a "wonderfully welcoming work of art that's as funny and entertaining as it is brilliant, beautiful, and deep" (Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal). SPIRITED AWAY is a wondrous fantasy about a young girl, Chihiro, trapped in a strange new world of spirits. When her parents undergo a mysterious transformation, she must call upon the courage she never knew she had to free herself and return her family to the outside world. An unforgettable story brimming with creativity, SPIRITED AWAY will take you on a journey beyond your imagination. "To enter the world of Hayao Miyazaki is to experience a kind of lighthearted enchantment that is unique to the world of animation" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). It's a fantastic tale the whole family will want to experience over and over again.

Spirited Away Specifications

The highest grossing film in Japanese box-office history (more than 4 million), Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away (Sen To Chihiro Kamikakushi) is a dazzling film that reasserts the power of drawn animation to create fantasy worlds. Like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and Lewis Carroll's Alice, Chihiro (voice by Daveigh Chase--Lilo in Disney's Lilo & Stitch) plunges into an alternate reality. On the way to their new home, the petulant adolescent and her parents find what they think is a deserted amusement park. Her parents stuff themselves until they turn into pigs, and Chihiro discovers they're trapped in a resort for traditional Japanese gods and spirits. An oddly familiar boy named Haku (Jason Marsden) instructs Chihiro to request a job from Yubaba (Suzanne Pleshette), the greedy witch who rules the spa. As she works, Chihiro's untapped qualities keep her from being corrupted by the greed that pervades Yubaba's mini-empire. In a series of fantastic adventures, she purges a river god suffering from human pollution, rescues the mysterious No-Face, and befriends Yubaba's kindly twin, Zeniba (Pleshette again). The resolve, bravery, and love Chihiro discovers within herself enable her to aid Haku and save her parents. The result is a moving and magical journey, told with consummate skill by one of the masters of contemporary animation. MPAA Rated: PG ("Some scary moments") --Charles Solomon

Heaven's Lost Property: Complete Series (Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Heaven's Lost Property: Complete Series (Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Overview

Tomoki’s life was normal until a wish-granting angelic android named Ikaros fell from the sky and started calling him master! Of course, thanks to his raging teenage hormones, most of Tomoki’s wishes have something to do with panties. And that makes things pretty complicated, because one simple wish can lead to a rampaging robot made out of frilly undergarments. One tiny wish can turn bloomers into bombs capable of blowing up entire neighborhoods! If Tomoki doesn’t learn to control his impulses around Ikaros, and be more careful with his wishes, the chaos will only get crazier. Luckily, even with such a dirty mind, Tomoki’s heart is in the right place. His hands, however, are a completely different story.

The Limited Edition version comes in a collectible, rigid art box.

Heaven's Lost Property: Complete Series (Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Specifications

Based on the manga by Suu Minazuki, Heaven's Lost Property (2009) is another example of the nerd-meets-submissive-beauty genre, in the tradition of Chobits and Steel Angel Kurumi. Teenage Tomoki, who lives alone in rural Japan while his parents are away, insists "there's nothing like peace and quiet." He loses any hope of either when an explosion brings down beautiful, scantily clad Ikaros, who announces she's a "Pet-Class Angeloid." Tomoki is now her master, and she lives only to fulfill his desires. The presence of the buxom Ikaros gets Tomoki in trouble with his best friend and next-door neighbor Sohara. Nymph, a second Angeloid, arrives and reveals that Ikaros is really Uranus Queen, a terrible warrior, like Kurumi. Numerous contretemps ensue before things get sorted out more or less satisfactorily. Unfortunately, Tomoki comes across as a much less sympathetic character than Tenchi or Keitaro in Love, Hina: he's a lecher, a peeping tom, a slacker, and a fussbudget, and giving him occasional lines about friendship doesn't make up for his loutish behavior. But the series draws viewers for its many jiggle shots and panty jokes, rather than nuanced characters or plot subtleties. The popularity of Heaven's Lost Property and the related second TV series, OAV, and theatrical feature suggests that there's a large audience of lonely, hormonal adolescents eager to indulge their fantasies. (Rated TV MA: risqué humor, toilet humor, nudity, violence, violence against women) --Charles Solomon

Eden of the East: The King of Eden (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Eden of the East: The King of Eden (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Overview

The intrigue goes international in The King of Eden, a feature-length conspiracy thriller that continues the action of the acclaimed Eden of the East. The deadly game that began in Japan now intensifies on the streets of New York City. The rules are the same: Do whatever it takes to win. Die if you lose.

Takizawa prevented Japan’s destruction – and then he vanished. Six months later, clues lead Saki to the Big Apple in search of her missing friend. Meanwhile, the remaining Seleção are plotting their final move. Some of them would prefer Takizawa dead and out of the way. Some might even be willing to help him achieve his goals. Unfortunately, some are prepared to destroy everything if it means claiming checkmate in Mr.Outside’s puzzling game.

Eden of the East: The King of Eden (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Specifications

The theatrical feature Eden of the East: The King of Eden (2009) takes place six months after the hit broadcast series ended--when Akira Takizawa vanished after liberating 20,000 NEETS (young men with No Employment, Education or Training) and saving Japan from destruction by missiles. Saki Morimi kept the "Noblesse Oblige" cell phone that identified Takizawa as Seleçao No. 9, one of 12 agents charged by the mysterious Mr. Outside with saving a faltering, apathetic Japan. She flies to New York when an old message gives her a clue to his whereabouts. Takizawa has once again had most of his memories erased, but he and Saki rekindle their relationship while outwitting threats from the remaining Seleçaos. Voice actors Jason Liebrecht and Leah Clark once again make Takizawa and Saki a singularly engaging and believable couple, even in the most improbable circumstances. As he did in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, writer-director Kenji Kamiyama uses a reference to J.D. Salinger as a key element in the plot. (This time, it's the scene in The Catcher in the Rye in which Holden Caulfield watches his sister Phoebe trying to catch the golden ring on the carousel.) The King of Eden ends halfway through the story, as Saki and Takizawa prepare to return to Japan to resolve the battle of the Seleçaos. But Kamiyama builds the suspense so skillfully, the viewer feels impatient for the release of the second feature, Paradise Lost, rather than cheated. The theme of Eden of the East, the need for young people to revitalize the spirit and economy of Japan, seems prescient in light of the reports of young Japanese volunteering in record numbers to assist in the cleanup of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The Blu-ray disc (and the second DVD) contain Air Communication--the original series recut into a prequel feature (only in Japanese). (Unrated, suitable for ages 14 and older: profanity, violence, nudity, risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Great Price Fairy Tail: Part 1 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Discount for Kids

Fairy Tail: Part 1 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Fairy Tail: Part 1 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Overview

In the Kingdom of Fiore, powerful wizards make their living by joining magical guilds and contracting out their services to become "wizards for hire". Harnessing the forces of Dragon Fire, Ice, Weaponry, and the Zodiac, four young wizards of the infamous guild Fairy Tail team up to seek their fortunes. Growing stronger with every mission, they travel the countryside helping people and battling rival guilds, but with personalities as different as their magic skills, this team may end up doing more damage than good.

Fairy Tail: Part 1 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Specifications

Based on the manga by Hiro Mashima, the comedy-adventure Fairy Tale (2009) ran for 111 episodes in Japan, and it's easy to understand why: the series has a freewheeling nuttiness that plays like an irreverent mash-up of Slayers, Bleach, and One Piece. Lucy, a young celestial wizard, arrives in the city of Magnolia, hoping to join a sorcerer's guild. She stumbles into the headquarters of the eccentric Fairy Tale guild, and quickly forms a team with three of its zaniest members. Rough-and-tumble Natsu is a powerful fire wizard; he travels with his blue talking cat, Happy. However, Natsu gets violent motion sickness on trains, boats, carriages, and every other conveyance, which undercuts his effectiveness. Gary is an equally strong ice wizard, but he keeps losing his clothes and has to fight enemies in his boxers. Erza's transformative magic awes Lucy, but the hot-tempered redhead is no saner than the others. The improbable quartet tackles various assignments, battling demons and evil wizards. They invariably come out on top, but wreak havoc on their surroundings--which lands them in trouble with the Council of Elders. In a four-part adventure (episodes 5 to 8), they destroy a cursed flute whose melodies kill everyone within earshot. But they blow up a railway station, level a trestle bridge, and flatten an entire village in the process. Although many anime series have offered similar blends of slapstick and supernatural derring-do, director Shinji Ishihara and his crew keep the material fresh and funny. Voice actors Todd Haberkorn (Natsu) and Newton Pittman (Gary) bring a lively edge to their feuding friendship, and Cherami Leigh (Lucy) avoids the clichés of the ingénue role. Fairy Tale spawned an OAV in 2011, and a theatrical feature is slated for 2012. (Rated TV 14: cartoon violence, minor risqué humor, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

As the film opens, Vash keeps bank robber Gasback and his henchmen from killing each other. Twenty years later, Gasback attacks Macca City, the town the henchmen built. A five billion double dollar policy from the Bernardelli Insurance Society protects the gargantuan bronze statue looming over the town, so Meryl and Milly are on hand to protect the company's investment. Gasback's plan has brought scores of bounty hunters to Bacca in pursuit of the staggering reward on his head, including Amelia, a mysterious redhead who has the misfortune to catch Vash's eye. As bullets fly, Vash keeps people from being killed and faces down his old friend, gun-totin' preacher Nicholas Wolfwood. When the smoke finally clears and the credits roll, Vash learns that every throw of the dice can have greater consequences then he realizes. Johnny Yong Bosch re-creates the role of Vash, mixing over-the-top romantic nonsense and serious reflections. The rest of the cast is new, with Brad Hawkins as a slightly cooler Wolfwood and Trina Nishimura as a properly befuddled Milly. In the extras, Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow says that Badlands Rumble was made in response to the requests of North American fans. Given the popularity of Trigun--and the movie's inconclusive ending--there may be more adventures in store for the irrepressible Humanoid Typhoon.
