At just 30 minutes, the "Movie" feels like a lost episode from the broadcast series. The Eizuo Hakusho (1994-1995) music videos combine bits of new animation with repurposed footage from the series; Mu Mu Hakusho is a series of miniature nightmares in which Yusuke dreams he's married to Botan. Fans of Yu Yu Hakusho will be delighted to get this material, which has never been released in America. The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it’s based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud’s former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita

The second season of the fantasy-adventure Spice and Wolf (2009) picks up where the first one left off: with merchant Craft Lawrence and Holo, the ancient wolf-spirit who takes the form of a beautiful young woman, wandering through a world that resembles Renaissance Europe. Their ultimate goal is Holo's home village of Yoitz in the far north, but no one knows exactly where it is or if it still exists. It's not clear why Lawrence is so devoted to Holo: she insults him, fusses at him, spends his money, and gets drunk. But he apparently enjoys being a doormat. Most of the season is devoted to two story lines, one involving a scheme to exploit the inflated price of iron pyrite (fool's gold) in the town of Kumersun; the second centers on an unsavory fur-trading deal. The stories are very, very talky with only minimal action, and the filmmakers cut corners, reusing backgrounds and animation. The ending suggests a third season may be in the works: Lawrence and Holo are only slightly closer to their goal than they were at the beginning, and the myth that the "Moonhunting Bear" destroyed Yoitz could be developed further. There's lots of gratuitous fan-service nudity of Holo, and her furry ears and tail leave the viewer with the unsettling feeling that Spice and Wolf is aimed at adolescent furries. The OAV Supernatural: The Anime Series (2011) is an anime first: an American live-action show reworked as a Japanese animation series. (The original Supernatural debuted in 2005 on the WB, and continues on the CW.) Sam and Dean Winchester are Hunters--licensed officers who tool around the United States in a classic black Chevy Impala, pursuing demons, ghosts, vampires, and other evil spirits. They're also looking for their father, a Hunter who's chasing the evil entity that killed their mother. Almost all the specters strike attractive young women, and the series soon devolves into a damsel-in-distress formula, with Sam and Dean arriving in the nick of time to dispatch the threat with silver bullets, salt, and fire. Some of the episodes are reworked from the original program; others are new story lines for the characters. But too many of them play like a mash-up of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Hardy Boys. Supernatural: The Anime Series recalls old live-action-based Saturday morning shows like The Karate Kid and Fonz and the Happy Days Gang. The designs for the characters are stiff, and the animation remains minimal, with still drawings accompanying voice-over dialogue. Although there are occasional interesting special effects, the series doesn't really make use of the potential that animation offers. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles repeat their roles as Sam and Dean, and appear in tight T-shirts to introduce each episode. In the extras, Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow says that Badlands Rumble was made in response to the requests of North American fans.
