The Astonishing Work of Tezuka Osamu Review

The Astonishing Work of Tezuka Osamu

The Astonishing Work of Tezuka Osamu Overview

His impact on Manga and Anime is impossible to measure. It was his work that changed the evolutionary path of Japanese animation that today sets it apart from all else. Anime Academy

Known as the god of manga and the father of anime, Tezuka Osamu (1928 1989) has created hundreds of comics, dozens of films, and even some television series (including such internationally beloved shows as ASTRO BOY and KIMBA THE WHITE LION.) His pioneering, unparalleled career is without rival for its extraordinary range of visual styles. Included in this set are some of Osamu s most legendary works, including Pictures at an Exhibition and Legend of the Forest. The former combines 10 individual short vignettes to create stunning visual riffs on classic fine art. But the 30-minute Legend of the Forest is the animator s masterpiece. An epic of forest faeries, sprites, wizards, and animals defending themselves against greedy industrialists bent on destroying nature, the film stylistically traces the evolution of animation from 19th-century etchings, to Disney and Fleischer cartoons, to contemporary anime. The animation in Legend of the Forest is as ravishing and inventive as anything seen in Disney s Fantasia. Kimstim and Kino are proud to release this astonishingly imaginative collection of Osamu s 13 most innovative pieces, many of which are the master s own personal favorites.

The Exquisite Short Films of Kihachiro Kawamoto Review

The Exquisite Short Films of Kihachiro Kawamoto

The Exquisite Short Films of Kihachiro Kawamoto Overview

Kimstim and Kino are proud to present this collection of short films from one of the world s greatest stop-motion animators: Kihachiro Kawamoto. Famous for his beautiful, expressive puppets, Kawamoto began his career in the 1950s. Honing his skills at the legendary Kratky Studios in Prague (under the mentorship of celebrated Czech animator Jiri Trnka), Kawamoto harnessed Japan s unique aesthetic traditions to create visually stunning stories. Drawing on ancient legends, contemporary short novels, as well as Noh, Kabuki, and Bunraku doll theater, Kawamoto s haunting, poetic films speak of passion and loss in worlds populated by ghosts and demons. ALL FILMS ARE IN JAPANESE WITH OPTIONAL ENGLISH SUBTITLES, UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED.

THE BREAKING OF BRANCHES IS FORBIDDEN (14 min / 1968 / Color) A monk orders a young acolyte, who happens to have a fondness for sake, to guard a beautiful cherry blossom tree.

AN ANTHROPO-CYNICAL FARCE (8 min / 1970 / B&W / IN FRENCH WITH OPTIONAL ENGLISH SUBTITLES) A dog race is interrupted by a ringmaster who attaches fish to the animals collars and makes them run in circles. The crowd becomes incensed and the ringmaster finds himself in a race for his life.

THE DEMON (8 min / 1972 / Color) A pair of hunters encounter a ghastly demon in the woods. Escaping by severing the apparition s arm, they make an even more grisly discovery on the journey home. Based on the 12th-century Japanese medieval legend Konjaku-monogatari.

THE TRIP (12 min / 1973 / Color / NO DIALOGUE) A young girl sets off on a surreal metaphysical voyage through which she will learn all the pain and joy of life.

A POET S LIFE (19 min / 1974 / Color) A mysterious meditation on the power of poetic imagination. A worker fired from a factory for demanding higher wages is plagued by ghastly nightmares. Based on a story by novelist Kobo Abe.

DOJOJI TEMPLE (19 min / 1976 / Color) Two pilgrims, an elderly monk and his young disciple, out on a spiritual journey, encounter a mysterious woman whose frenzied passions transform her into a huge white serpent.

HOUSE OF FLAMES (19 min / 1979 / Color) A Japanese Drama of the Absurd. A young village woman is torn between two suitors. Out of anguish, she decides to destroy herself. Although her intentions are pure, her death reverberates with shocking consequences.

The Exquisite Short Films of Kihachiro Kawamoto Specifications

The short films of Kihachiro Kawamoto represent a fusion of Eastern European stop-motion animation and traditional Japanese Bunraku puppetry. Kawamoto studied under the great Czech animator Jiri Trnka (The Puppet Films of Jiri Trnka), and his cut-out/puppet combination films--"An Anthropo-Cynical Farce," "The Trip," and "A Poet's Life"--share the dark visions of the old Soviet Bloc artists. "The Breaking of Branches is Forbidden," in which a drunken novice violates the orders of a severe old monk, echoes the farcical Kyogen comedies that break up programs of Noh plays. "Dojoji Temple" is a strikingly beautiful retelling of a popular Kabuki play: overcome by lust, a woman transforms into a demon-serpent to take revenge on the monk who rejects her. Kawamoto has said that "Dojoji" allowed him to experiment with the combination of two- and three-dimensional elements needed for "House of Flames," his masterpiece to date. Reminiscent of a Noh tragedy, the film recounts the story of three star-crossed lovers whose suffering transcends the phenomenal world. The title of the collection is not hyperbole: Kawamoto's films truly are exquisite. His most recent film, The Book of the Dead is also available on DVD. The Animation Show, Vol. 3 Review

The Animation Show, Vol. 3

The Animation Show, Vol. 3 Overview

Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeldt have returned with another collection of incredible animated short films! This program brings together the best work from The Animation Show’s 2007 theatrical program and additional groundbreaking shorts, 17 in all. See the latest work from leading independent animators - Don Hertzfeldt, Mike Judge, Bill Plympton, Joanna Quinn and Pes! There’s an enormous array of great animation that’s rarely seen in the United States. We hope this formative new DVD series will continue to bring more artists and unseen classics into the spotlight for many years to come…

The Animation Show, Vol. 3 Specifications

For those who missed Mike Judge and Doug Hertzfeldt's semi-annual Animation Show when it visited their local theater, here's another collection of the best and most imaginative animated shorts culled from the screenings. As with previous volumes, there's a wide variety of animation styles on display in Volume 3, from CGI ("No Room For Gerold," about quarreling animal roommates) and 2-D ("Tyger," based on a poem by William Blake, and featuring puppet work with animation) to live action/animation blends ("Carlitopolis") and one-dimensional work (Hertzfeldt's affecting "Everything Will Be Okay," about its line drawing protagonist's struggles with mental illness). Subject matter is equally diverse, from the wryly comic "Astronauts" and Bill Plympton's "Guide Dog" (a sequel to his "Guard Dog") to the atmospheric "Tyger" and the noir-influenced "Shuteye Hotel." Judge himself contributes an intro courtesy his malcontent alter egos of Beavis and Butthead; the package includes cnversations with several of the filmmakers about their shorts, as well as text interviews with all 11 filmmakers, which can be viewed in PDF format through the viewer's DVD-ROM. Trailers and previews for other MTV programs and previous volumes of The Animation Show round out the extras. -- Paul Gaita The Animation Show, Vol. 3is Available!

Masters of Russian Animation - Volume 4 Overview

An extraordinary collection of award-winning animated short films by Russia's world-renowned directors and artists. Digitally restored from 35mm materials newly printed by the National Film Archive of Russia, these are the highly personal animated short films from the Soyuzmultfilm Studio. Produced during from 1986 through 1990 -- perestroika -- this volume of films, many of which received highest honors at international film festivals, are each unique, crafted artistically and intellectually. Vol 4 includes twelve films, seven directed by women. Door, Dream and Alter Ego are all by Nina Shorina; Boy is A Boy and Cat and Clown are both by Natasha Golovanova; Girlfriend is by Yelena Gavrilko and Croak x croak is by Yelena Fedorova. Also Liberated Don Quixote by Vadim Kurchevsky, Martinko by Eduard Nazarov, Bit Underground Ball by Stanislav Sokolov, Kele by Mikhail Aldashin & Peep Pedmanson, and Cat and Company by ALexander Guriev.

Masters of Russian Animation - Volume 4 Specifications

The 12 shorts in this collection were made at the Soyuzmultfilm Studio during the late '80s, shortly before the collapse of the Soviet regime ended the subsidies that had financed the studio's output since its establishment in 1936. Nina Shorina's mordant stop-motion film "Door" (1986) probably ranks as the best known work in the anthology. The outré inhabitants of a crumbling apartment house go to enormous trouble getting in and out of the building without using the front door--even after a boy demonstrates that it's unlocked. "Door" satirizes the mismanaged life Soviet citizens endured for decades, but the rest of the films draw primarily on non-Russian sources for inspiration. Natasha Golovanova's charming "Boy Is a Boy" (1986) reflects the influence of British illustrator Ronald Searle; "Liberated Don Quixote" (1987) by Vadim Kurchevsky offers backgrounds that evoke the paintings of El Greco; Mikhail Aldashin and Peep Pedmanson borrowed heavily from the Hubley Studio films "Keke" (1988). While Shorina's "Alter Ego" (1989) resembles a watered-down version of the work of Czech surrealist animator Jan Svankmajer. Although many of the films are interesting and entertaining, the studio was clearly past its prime. The viewer looks in vain for the compelling personal visions of Yuri Norstein and Fyodor Khitruk, who dominated Soyuzmultfilm during its most creative period. Complete contents: 1. "Door," 2. "Boy Is a Boy," 3. "Liberated Don Quixote," 4. "Martinko," 5. "Big Underground Ball," 6. "Cat and Clown," 7. "Dream," 8. "Kele," 9. "Alter Ego," 10. "Girlfriend," 11. "Croak x Croak," 12. "Cat and Company." Unrated, it is suitable for ages 10 and older for minor cartoon violence, grotesque imagery, and difficult themes. -- Charles Solomon Masters of Russian Animation - Volume 4is Available!

Aria the Animation Season 1

Aria the Animation Season 1 Overview

In the early 24th century, Mars has been terraformed by mankind into a sparkling planet covered in water. Akari Mizunashi, at the age of 15, has left everything behind to travel to that reborn world, now known as Aqua. More than anything, Akari wants to be an "undine" - a female gondolier who navigates the canals of the Aquan city of Neo-Venezia. As she begins her training with the prestigious Aria Company, will she be up to the challenges that await her on the path to achieve her dream? Contains the complete 13-episode first season. DVD Features: Scene access, Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo audio for Japanese dialogue, English subtitles and English on-screen translations. PLUS: More features to be announced.

Aria the Animation Season 1 Specifications

The shojo (girl's) fantasy Aria (2005) takes places 150 years after Mars was "terraformed" into the watery planet Aqua. Fifteen-year-old Akari Mizunashi has come to Aqua to become an "Undine," a woman who steers a gondola through the canals of Neo Venezia, offering information about its landmarks to tourists. She and her friends Aika and Alice study with the three most celebrated Undines in the city. Although Akari can be a bit of a klutz at times, her existence is so tame and wholesome, it makes "The Bobsey Twins" feel like life in the fast lane. Some critics complained that the popular Azumanga Daioh, like Seinfeld, wasn't about anything. But the girls in that high school cast acted like real individuals; Akari and her friends behave so well they suggest throwbacks to a '50s juvenile novel. The idea of building a perfect replica of the city of Venice as a tourist attraction fits in with the Japanese predilection for creating theme restaurants and parks of all sizes. A pastel-colored Neverland inhabited exclusively by cute teenagers and cute (if strange-looking) cats may appeal to adolescent girls, but it will quickly bore their brothers and older viewers. Kozue Amano's Aria manga scored a big hit in Japan, and the animated series spawned two sequels and an OVA. In Japanese only, with English subtitles. Cars 2 (Two-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging) Specifications

Lightning McQueen (voice by Owen Wilson), Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), Sally (Bonnie Hunt), and the rest of the gang from Radiator Springs return to the screen in this sequel to Pixar's Cars (2006). But instead of evoking a nostalgic vision of Route 66 through the American Southwest, director John Lasseter and his artists spoof James Bond films in a fast-paced adventure that mixes espionage and road racing. After a successful season on the track, Lightning is looking forward to some rest at home, but Mater gets him involved in an elaborate three-part international race sponsored by Sir Miles Axlerod (Eddie Izzard) to promote his new synthetic auto fuel. While serving on Lightning's pit crew, Mater inadvertently gets mixed up with two British secret agent cars, Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) and Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer), who are investigating a plot to sabotage the race. Myriad complications ensue before Lightning and Mater get back to the (relative) peace of Radiator Springs. The Pixar artists clearly had a lot of fun spoofing locations in Tokyo, London, Paris, and the Italian Riviera, and creating auto versions of sumo wrestlers, kabuki actors, Queen Elizabeth II, and a doting Italian mother. The use of 3-D adds adrenaline to the racing sequences. Cars 2 lacks the emotional impact of Toy Story 2, Up, and most of the other Pixar features, but that will do little to lessen its appeal to its target audience, boys who love cars, driving games, and car toys. Cars 2 is screening with Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation, a new short with Woody, Buzz, Barbie, Ken, and the rest of the Toy Story gang. (Rated G: minor toilet humor and a few scary moments.) --Charles Solomon
